Soroptimists Host Baby Shower

    May 25th to June 1st 2012

For many expectant mothers in our community, the excitement of the upcoming birth of their child is diminished by life stresses. In some cases, a woman has fled domestic violence, which can accelerate during pregnancy or after the birth of a baby.  Other times, poverty has made it impossible to prepare for a baby.

Soroptimist International of Hood River (SIHR), a women’s service organization, is hosting the seventh annual community baby “shower” to benefit little ones born to families who are not able to afford things for their baby.  Donated shower gifts will be given to The Next Door’s New Parent Services program in Hood River and Families First in The Dalles, whose trained visitors support families expecting their first baby. These programs assist women and their families who have very few resources for their new little one.

There are multiple ways people can donate. Gifts can be dropped off from Friday, May 25th through Friday, June 1st at the following locations:  Columbia River Bank and Center Point Bank in Hood River and The Dalles, Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Bambinos in Hood River, and The Next Door in Hood River (965 Tucker Road) and The Dalles (1005 W. 6th St.).  Employees of participating businesses can donate new shower gifts or money at work.

Please donate the following NEW, unwrapped, gender-neutral shower gifts:

Disposable diapers (newborn & larger sizes), baby oil, shampoo, wash, wipes, Q-tips, thermometers, nail clippers, teething supplies, pacifiers, glass bottles, diaper rash ointment, disposable cameras, photo albums, baby toys, board books, receiving blankets, Swaddle Keepers, quilts, diaper bags, socks, booties, hats, pajamas, onesies, etc.

Cash or checks (made payable to SIHR) may be left at Center Pointe Bank or mailed to P.O. Box 51, Hood River, OR 97031.

“We hope that providing multiple avenues for participation will allow more people than ever to get involved in helping these little ones,” says Stephanie Hartman, chair of the Soroptimist Community Baby Shower committee. “These babies deserve to have their basic needs met. I know we can count on the many loving and generous people of our community to help ease the burden on new mothers by providing basic items for a great start.”
