Klahre House Treatment Groups
Aggression Replacement Training
This powerful intervention is designed to teach adolescents to understand and replace aggression and antisocial behavior with positive alternatives. The program's three-part approach includes training in Prosocial Skills, modeling, role playing, performance feedback, and transfer training Anger Control, a five-step sequence to teach anger replacement skills, and Moral Reasoning. guided discussions and debates of moral dilemmas to facilitate mature moral reasoning and correct thinking errors.
Social Skills
This group utilizes the Skillstreaming the Adolescent curriculum. Skillstreaming addresses the social skill needs of students who display aggression, immaturity, withdrawal, or other problem behaviors. The Skillstreaming approach utilizes modeling, role playing, performance feedback, and transfer (homework). Students develop competence in dealing with interpersonal conflicts and learn to use self-control.
Refusal Skills
Developed by some of the same authors as the Skillstreaming curriculum, this social skill curriculum focuses on the thinking and communication skills necessary to react and cope assertively with some of the high-risk situations that youth in recovery may encounter.
Peer Mediation
This group utilizes the curriculum Peer Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Schools, an effective means of teaching students peer mediation skills as well as providing students with alternative skills for resolving conflict. Through the training, students become more aware of the perspectives of others, learn and practice active listening skills, and master the six steps of mediation.
Girls Groups and Boys Groups
These gender specific groups utilize the Girls Circle and Boys Council curriculums, both of which offer a strength-based approach toward the unique struggles of young girls and boys trying to become adults in our society.
Changing Offender Behavior
This evidence based treatment curriculum is described as “a comprehensive program designed to reduce recidivism among participants and promote positive life change.” Participants learn 1). to identify situations, thoughts, and feelings that are high-risk for criminal behavior, 2). to replace faulty thinking with rational thinking, 3). problem-solving, coping, and social skills, 4). to plan alternative, responsible responses to replace negative responses to situations, and 5). to evaluate their behavior and reinforce responsible behavior.
Process Group
This daily group is a place for youth to give practical application to many of the skills on which they are working in individual and group counseling. Group members are given daily practice in the skills of Active Listening, Giving Feedback, Receiving Feedback, Asking Questions, Introducing Yourself, Identifying Feelings, Helping Others, and Problem-Solving.
STEP Group
This substance abuse group is a partnership between our program and our local community mental health provider, Mid-Columbia Center for Living. It utilizes the well known MET/CYT (Motivational Enhancement Therapy/Cannabis Youth Treatment) curriculum developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This evidence-based curriculum was designed to specifically address the problem of marijuana use by adolescents, and has been shown to be an effective intervention in the population we serve.
