Derryll Dexter

Treatment Services Operations Manager

Derryll DexterHi, I'm Derryll, the Treatment Services Operations Manager. I have worked for The Next Door for over 20 years, and before that I worked 10 years at another youth treatment program--the J Bar J Boys Ranch in Bend, Oregon. I oversee paperflow and billing for NDI's foster care and day treatment programs; I also supervise the Technology Coordinator who keeps our networks, Internet, and email running smoothly. I like working for NDI because of the people--the staff working in direct services are hard working and caring individuals.

Because I've worked in youth services for over 30 years, the other jobs I've had are a distant memory. They include Benton-Linn Economic Opportunity Council, a window shade manufacturer, and a dental laboratory. I vividly remember the many dedicated people from the non-profit program. I liked the technical aspect of making teeth, and the change in pace at the manufacturing job. I have learned a lot from my diverse past.

In my spare time I melt glass into jewelry and other art.

Some of my favorite quotes:
I'm old as dirt but twice as salty.
When I quit leaving I'll be gone.
When someone's driving you crazy, don't drive--it's a short walk.
If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.

How I make myself do things I don't want to do:
It's like homework--I just do it--from start to finish. I don't let one question or part stop me, during a task, if I run into a problem, I press on, doing as much I can and come back to that part later.
